Dharwad is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka, located in the northwestern region of the country. It is located 430 kilometers (270 mi) northwest of Bangalore, on NH-48, between Bangalore and Pune, and has an area of 213 km2 (82 sq mi). Dharwad Pedha(Peda) is one of the famous sweet delicacies of Karnataka. Many say that it was started by the Thakur Family who migrated from Uttar Pradesh during the plague in the early 19th century. One of their members Ram Ratan Singh started making and selling these pedhas. It was prepared from the milk of Dharwadi Buffaloes. His grandson Babu Singh Thakur started expanding their business in Line Bazaar street of Dharwad and soon was known as “Line Bazaar Pedha”. What started as a single outlet today has over 25 outlets spread across Karnataka. It is a must-try food in Dharwad.

2. Girmit

Girmit is very popular street food in North Karnataka. It is generally a snack in the evening along with delicious Mirchi-Bhajjis or Pakoras for many Kannadigas. It is prepared from puffed rice or churmuri or murmura along with spicy masala similar to that of Poha.

Just like Cafe’s are famous these days, Khanavali’s are famous for Desi/Tradition South Indian Food. Here you get Rotti Oota which is a treat for all foodies. The typical menu of a Kanhavali is as follows:

Pineapple Shira, commonly known as Kesari Bath, is a famous sweet in North Karnataka made with pineapple, sugar, ghee, Rava, and nuts. It is generally eaten with Upma and is also served as dessert.
