Top Ten Places to visit in Uttara Kannada

Uttar Kannada is also known as the North Canara region.  Being one of the largest districts in Karnataka, it includes 11 taluks, namely, Sirsi, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Karwar, Kumta, Haliyal, Ankola, Mundgod, Siddapur, Yellapur, Supa.

It is covered with very thick forest, so one can expect high rain, which makes it very attractive with greenery and many scenic views. There are thousands of tourists places to visit, many hidden gems are there.

Some main places to visit are:

1. Sathodi Falls

Sathoddi Falls is a waterfall in India that is formed by several unnamed streams near Kallaramane Ghat, Uttara Kannada District, near Yellapur, Karnataka, and 32 km from Yellapur. It is about 15 metres tall. The stream then flows into the backwaters of the Kodasalli Dam, into the Kali River. [1]

It has a very beautiful scenic view. We have to do a small trek to reach out to this place. There is one small restaurant nearby, but it’s better to carry our own food. There is also a bridge called “shivapura bridge” in its backwater. Many pre-wedding shoots are done here.

2. Magod Falls

Magod Falls is a group of waterfalls in Karnataka, India, where the river Bedti falls from a height of nearly 200 metres (660 ft) in two steps.

The falls are located about 17 kilometres (11 mi) from the town of Yellapur, in the district of Uttara Kannada, and are easily accessible from several lakes and towns. [2]

It is nearer to Sathodi Falls & Benne Hole Falls. You can drive your vehicle till the falls(2/4 wheelers only).

3. The Marikamba Temple

Sirsi, Karnataka, India is home to the Marikamba Temple. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Durga in her various forms. Marigudi is another name for the town, with “Doddamma” referring to the “older sister” of all Mariammas in Karnataka. Durga’s eight-armed figure, also known as Renuka and Yellamma, is the major icon. It was constructed in 1688. It is located 83 kilometres (52 miles) east of Gokarna. [3]

Every year there will be public fair, which is the largest fair in the entire state of Karnataka.

4. Vibhuthi Falls

The Vibhuthi Falls are found in the Ankola taluk of Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. Limestone is the term “Vibhuthi.” The water in this waterfall flows past limestone rocks near Yana, earning it the name “Vibhuthi Falls.” [4]

5. Sahasralinga

Sahasralinga is a Hindu pilgrimage site located 14 kilometres from Sirsi Taluk in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. It is located along the Shalmala River and is known for the thousands of lingas carved into the river’s rocks and along its banks. The river has 100 Shivalingas in it. These are natural and not carved.

6. Kannur Falls (Devkar Falls)

Devakar Falls, also known as Vajra Falls or Devamala Falls, is a water fall viewable from Devakar village in Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka, India. There is no well-developed road leading to the water falls, and access is impossible during the wet season. The water falls from a height of roughly 200 metres and then flows into the Kadra reservoir.

7. Kasarkod Beach

The Kasarkod beach is a 5-kilometer long expanse of sand. This pristine beach is flanked by Casuarinas and coated in white sand. Those who want to walk around Kasarkod Beach will enjoy the picturesque beauty and calm that surrounds it.
This beach is not at all busy when compared to most of Karnataka’s famed beaches. A perfect place for peace of mind. Public Transport is rarely available to this beach.

8. Mirjan Fort

The Mirjan Fort is situated on the west coast of the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India’s southernmost state. The fort, which is noted for its architectural beauty, has seen multiple wars in the past. The National Highway 66 lies around 0.5 kilometres (0.31 miles) away, while Gokarna, the famed Hindu pilgrimage centre on India’s west coast, is 21 kilometres (13 miles).

The Mirjan Fort was first credited to Queen Chennabhairadevi of Gersoppa (under the Vijayanagara Empire) in the 16th century, according to the first historical version. She reigned for 54 years and lived in the fort as well. The port of Mirjan, 32 kilometres (20 miles) south of Karwar, was utilised to export pepper, saltpetre, and betel nut to Surat throughout her rule.

9. Apsarakonda

Apsarakonda Falls is thought to be a centuries-old waterfall. The word Apsarakonda means “angel’s pond.” The waterfall cascades down from a height of roughly 50 feet to a naturally formed pond below. The dazzling waterfall and sunset view from the top of the hill are also well-known attractions. Seeing the sun fall over the horizon across the huge sweep of the Arabian Sea is a breathtaking sight.

This is also called as Pond of the Celestial Nymphs.

10. Banavasi

Banavasi is a historic temple town near Sirsi in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, India. Banavasi was the historical capital of the Kannada empire, which ruled over the whole state of Karnataka. They were the first local empire to give Kannada and Karnataka prominence.
